History in a Pecan Shell

The community's post office had been named Grassdale around 1859 with James Manor as the postmaster. Discontinued in 1860, a new post office named Gregg, Texas opened in 1871. The following year the name was changed to honor the original postmaster.

The Houston and Texas Central Railway arrived in 1871 and Manor's population grew to 125. By 1892 there were 500 Manorites and 900 in 1914. Manor reached 1,000 residents, just as the Great Depression was being felt. The population declined to 654 residents. The population of Manor rose (slightly) to 688 in the 1940s.

In 1988 Manor had 1,233 citizens and by 1990 it was reported as 1,041.
