History in a Pecan Shell

The Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railway is responsible for Bushland. Named for Chicagoan William Henry Bush, he gave the land for the township and granted the railroad a right-of-way. The town was formally dedicated on July 3, 1908 and Bush's brother, Brother Charles B. Bush, opened a post office there in January 1909.

The population remained small and there were only 20 Bushlanders present for the 1920 census. It grew to 175 in 1940 and has seen settled back down to an estimated 130 according to the Handbook of Texas.
