History in a Pecan Shell

The name comes from a ranch whose brand was a circle on the back of cattle.

From 1918 to 1954 the settlement a dozen or so houses and a six-grade school. Naturally there was a store/ post office and a gas station. In 1949 the community, reached it�s high water mark of about 100 people.

When the store burned around 1965 (See Forum) it pretty much finished the town � since it was also the post office.

By 1980 the population was 49 and a few years later only the Baptist minister and his family was left.

Subject: Circle Back School 1956 Class Photo

I am attaching two photos of my second grade class at Circleback, Texas. I think it points out a mistake in your history. I couldn�t say for sure when the store burned, but I know it was still there when we lived there. As you can see in the picture, The school was still there in 1956. I think it closed that year.

My daddy worked for a man named Damron. I think his first name was Clayton but not sure about that. There was a gin there at that time owned by a mister Gage. I can�t remember his first name but I think his son was named Raymond and his birthday was February 29. He was 12 years old and had only had 4 birthdays.

Mrs. Rollins taught the first 3 grades. Her husband taught the next 3 grades. My mother wrote the names and grade of the children on the back of the picture. - Lottie Doyle, September 19, 2013
