History in a Pecan Shell

This late-arriving town appeared in 1928 and was named to honor one F. M. Dougherty (profession unknown). The town opened its post office and school in 1929 and the town seemed to have a bright future. Dougherty was bypassed by the construction of Highway 62 / 70 and this killed its chances of prosperity. It was able to maintain a population of 150 in the late 1940s and still had 135 living there in 1980. It declined to 100 by 1990 - but by 2000, it had increaded to 109.

Dougherty has kept its post office through the years and still appears on the official state map.
