History in a Pecan Shell

The town dates from 1884 when (first resident of Casto County) James Carter owned the giant 7-UP Ranch. In 1904 the land where the town was to be was bought by C. T. Herring. The town was platted in the shape of a flag which gave it its name.

The ranch was subdivided into farms in 1925 and a post office was granted as well as a hotel for prospective buyers. In two years the town had two stores, a lumberyard and a school that also served as a union church.

In 1930 the community built a four-room brick school.

Plans for growth were derailed by the community�s proximity to Dimmitt and improved highways.

In the early 1930s the population was a mere 10 individuals.

The post office closed in 1947 and social clubs merged with their counterparts in Dimmitt.

Although Flagg was technically abandoned, two miles west of the original townsite (FM 1055), several agricultural businesses remain. The population remained stagnant at 50 from 1940 through 1990.
