History in a Pecan ShellThe original name had been Jay Flat and the town was two miles northwest of the present location.

A time line of significant historic events

1886: Post office opened - first postmaster is Daniel Jay - part of the family that the town was named after.
1907: Stamford and Northwestern Railroad comes nearby and town moves to tracks.
1908: The first newspaper - The Jayton Herald is published.
1910: Jayton is incorporated
Fires destroyed many businesses in Jayton until waterlines and hydrants were set in place in the mid-1920s.
1954: Clairemont loses court fight for county seat status - and Jayton becomes county seat.
1957: Jayton builds their own courthouse.

Subject: Jayton, Texas in 1914

The above photo was taken in 1914. This was on Saturday afternoon and the town band is seated on the benches playing music. My father, Thomas W. Fowler played trumpet in this band. He was a young man at the time. The townsfolk and people who lived on farms gathered on the square each Saturday afternoon to visit and listen to the band.

This picture was in my mother's box of keepsake pictures and the date (1914) is written on the back. The photo itself has yellowed and has a couple of small tears in it so I took a picture of it with my digital camera using a high resolution and we were able to zoom in and read the signs on the buildings. You may be able to read "Bryant-Link Co." on the building on the right. On the white top building about the middle of the picture, the sign says "Corner Drug Store." Over on the left hand side there is a sign that reads "Glen Hancock". Underneath it says "Furniture" and underneath "Furniture" it says "Undertaker." My husband and I knew Glen Hancock in later years when we were growing up in Jayton. - Patricia Hamilton, Jayton, Texas (Yes, we are still living in Jayton. We were both born here.) May 09, 2006

Subject: The Coffee Pot Cafe

My husband and I remember the Coffee Pot Cafe from our childhood days and it was a treat to eat one of the good hamburgers there. As you can see by the photo, it looked exactly like a coffee pot. This cafe was around in the 1930s and early 40s. My husband is now 76 yrs old and I am 70 so we have some very good memories of those days in Jayton. Looking for Information on either the Piasa Tractor Company of Jayton, Texas or the Prairie Queen Tractor Mfg. Company of Temple, Texas. The Jayton company was incorporated in 1913 to build tractors, but no other information is known. As far as the Prairie Queen Tractor Company of Temple, In the early 1920s, the Prairie Queen 8-16 tractor (using a Gray Victory engine), appeared on the market, but for unknown reasons it left the market in or after 1922. It was priced at $765. Other than that no other details about the company or its tractor have been located. - Jim White, Liberty Hill, Texas, September 16, 2006
