Opdyke West TX - City Limit

History in a Bottle

Opdyke West has no 19th Century history and came close not to having a 20th Century history. It wasn't until 1984 when the community decided to incorporate. The community thought hard and long before coming up with a name. (See Opdyke, Texas.) What had previously been a trailer-park was to become a town. The region had been "dry" (as in the licensing of liquor) but with the new community, the game was changed. Oilfield workers provided the demand and although it has decreased from 200 residents at the time of incorporation, Opdyke West has maintained a fairly decent population (for the region) and amenities have grown to include a barbeque stand and a drive-through store.

Photographer's Note:
All I could see were mobile homes. Probably the remnants of when Reese Air Force Base was viable.

The sign is located on SH 114 5.5 miles east of Levelland." -
