History in a Pecan Shell
Once included in the Slaughter Ranch, the property was divided in the mid 1920s for small farms. A school district was formed in 1928, and the community's first store opened the following year.
In the late 1930s oil was discovered and Sundown became famous for it�s 2.5 mile long main street. The town prospered but in 1947 was struck by a killer tornado.
The 1950 census reported 1,487 residents with a slight decline by 1960 (1,186). By 2000 it was 1,505.
