History in a Pecan Shell

Twin Sisters, Texas was already in use, so when this town (with their own twin sisters) needed a name for the post office in 1902, the postmaster cobbled together the names of Meta and Reta Burns to form Mereta. The town was platted in 1904 when the town had a school, cotton gin and two stores. Ten years later there were 75 residents but this number fell to a mere 30 people in the mid 1920s.

By the mid 30s, there were only ten people living in Mereta although there were four businesses reported. A highway map from the Depression years shows churches, a school, post office, and two factories(?!) Somewhere along the line people drifted back and by the time WWII started, 75 Meretans were home. The population remained at that level into the 1990s.
