History in a Pecan Shell

Newman today is little more than a church and cemetery. Its isolated location is due to its having been a ranch in the 1880s. James F. Newman arrived in 1880 and a post office was granted the following year. It remained open for nine years.

Although only ten people called Newman home in the mid 1880s, by the end of that decade it had acquired a school which doubled as a Methodist Church until a separate church building was constructed in 1907.

With its anemic population, Newman was never able to support more than a grocery. After consolidating with the school in Sylvester after WWII, Newman�s population drifted away.
