History in a Pecan Shell

According to the Handbook of Texas, Okra, Texas was "named for the vegetable." The Texas and Pacific Railway was landowner when the town was settled in 1880. A post office was granted in 1899.

Okra's population was a mere fifty in 1914, declining to forty in 1940. It declined further to only 20 1980, where it remained for the 1990 census.
