Pioneer, Texas. (original) (raw)

History in a Pecan Shell
The community was established in the early 1880s and was granted a post office in 1885. It had an uneventful history until the 1920s when it underwent an oil boom. From a mere 30 people, it exploded to an estimated 5,000 residents who all left after the boom subsided. The 1980 population was reported to be 40 and that figure was the same for the 2000 census.
Photographer's Note:
"Pioneer was a pleasant little surprise. It is on FM374 about 4-1/2 miles SE of Cross Plains or about 7 miles NW of Rising Star. I somehow missed the Pioneer Cemetery right on TX 36." - Barclay Gibson
