History in a Pecan Shell

The town, now a suburb of Abilene, was named after pioneer J. J. Wylie who settled in the area in 1880.

In 1902 John H. Vance opened a store in the area and Mary V. Wylie, widow of J. J. Wylie, donated land for a school.

A post office was opened in the Vance store in 1904 and was designated �Sambo.� Mail was routed through Abilene in 1912. Mrs. Wylie donated an additional two acres for school expansion on the condition that the town be named after her late husband which was done. The town was later absorbed by Abilene.

The long low school is/was part of the Wylie school district which now includes parts of Abilene. That complex is now closed (I'm pretty sure). It is several miles to the west (Hwy 277) of what was considered to be Wylie. The red brick building is all that remains of the old Wylie main school complex. As best I remember there never was much there except for the school. I think the main building burned years ago. If I remember correctly it was a two or three story building. - Mike Price, October 15, 2007
