Etholen, Texas, Hudspeth County. (original) (raw)

History in a Pecan Shell

Named after the Etholen Knobs, a local group of buttes, the town is something of a minor mystery. While it appears on older maps and had a reported population around 25 as late as 1945, sources differ on the date of settlement. One states the town had a post office prior to 1884 while another gives a date of 1885. Whatever the facts on it's beginning, the proximity to Sierra Blanca was an obstacle in its development. It stopped appearing on maps in the 1960s.
