History in a Pecan Shell

Plateau once had a section house for the Texas and Pacific Railway, which came through this part of Texas in the 1880s. A post office was granted in 1907, but it closed in less than 10 years. According to The Handbook of Texas, the population was only 20 people in 1914.

In the early 1940s Plateau reached its high population (estimated) of 50 people, but it declined to only four people in the 1960s. One additional person was either born or moved to Plateau for the 1990 census.
