American Nile: Field/Faith/Family

February 12 - April 16, 2000

The Minnesota Museum of American Art will present a powerful and illuminating photographic profile of Mexican American migrant workers of the Red River Valley, American Nile: Field/Faith/Family, February 12 - April -16, 2000.

Through the photographs of Tom Lindfors and Richard Faulkner with the first-person narrative of Joe Campos, this exhibition tells the story of Mexican-American migrant workers in the sugar beet fields of North Dakota's Red River Valley.

Over 60 photographs trace a day in the life of the migrant families and Campos' story, in English and Spanish, tells of growing up in the close-knit community of migrant workers. Generations of Mexican Americans have migrated annually from Texas to the Red River Valley in search of better lives for their families. The exhibit also illustrates how some families have established new lives outside the migrant way of life.

Campos, who made his first trip to North Dakota when he was three weeks old, is now a resident of Grand Forks and the first Hispanic graduate of the University of North Dakota.

Tom Lindfors' photographs have been exhibited in Chicago, Santa Fe and Zurich, Switzerland. His images are part of the permanent archives of the Polaroid Collection.

Richard Faulkner studied photojournalism at Texas Christian University and the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has worked in commercial photography and taught eighth grade science. He currently resides in Chicago.
