Charles P. Helsell Named Director of Blanden Memorial Art Museum
The Blanden Memorial Art Museum and Blanden Charitable Foundation Boards of Trustees announce the appointment of Charles P. Helsell as Director of the Museum, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Helsell's appointment was confirmed at a Museum Board meeting on Tuesday, December 7, 1999. He began directing the Blanden on January 3, 2000.
Mr. Helsell comes from St. Paul, where he was Curator of the 3M corporate art collection. He grew in up in Fort Dodge and has been a benefactor of the Museum through gifts of art and pro bono curatorial activities. He holds a Bachelor of General Studies (Art/Architecture) degree from Montana State University at Bozeman, and has done graduate work in art history. Helsell has 34 years of experience in all aspects of museum and curatorial work. Previous positions include Curator, University of Minnesota Art Museum (now Weisman Art Museum) and Assistant Curator, Department of Prints and Drawings, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts. "The arts should be an integral part of everyone's life," says Mr. Helsell. He plans to offer thought-provoking exhibitions, programs and classes to Blanden visitors. Museum Board President Merrell Peters comments, "We are very fortunate to have someone with Mr. Helsell's knowledge and experience coming to work with the Blanden's collection.
Among the exhibitions Mr. Helsell has organized are "Bonnard and Vuillard: Color Lithographs," "The Drawings of Edward Gorey," "Women in Print: Prints from 3M by Contemporary Women Printmakers," and "Country Life, City Life: Prints from the Harold Peterson Collection."
