Buell Children's Museum at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center is Completed
After years of planning and months of construction, it's ready. The 12,000-square-foot, two-level Buell Children's Museum at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center boasts exciting and innovative hands-on exhibits and the latest in technology. It focuses on the arts, science and history, giving participants the tools to think and act creatively. And, it will stimulate and expand each person's interests through interactive and intriguing educational activities. (left: Artist rendering of the front of the Buell Children's Museum)
With a price tag of just under $3 million, the building has become more than anyone anticipated. "This is the finest children's museum in this state and possibly in the region," said Arts Center Executive Director Maggie Divelbiss. "We are enlarging a world where the arts are cherished, nurtured and celebrated."
The long-term goal of the museum is to be the ultimate resource, helping to strengthen arts education offered in schools throughout Southern Colorado. Intellectual areas continually being considered include logic/math, nature, linguistic, spatial, musical, kinesthetic, interpersonal and intra-personal. There will be opportunities to touch and explore, experiment and ask questions.
The new museum is named in honor of the late Temple Hoyne Buell, a Denver architect and philanthropist. His foundation contributed $1 million to launch the project in 1995. It is a much-expanded version of its predecessor, the PAWs Children's Museum. PAWs began as a Junior League project in a storefront on Main Street. It moved to the Arts Center in 1983.
