The Western Collection

The Museum's collection of western American art is one of the finest in the United States. It includes prints, paintings, sculpture, rare books, manuscripts and letters which span the entire history of western art beginning in the 1820s and continuing to 1970. Of special interest in the collection are prints by John J. Audobon of birds of Louisana and Texas, sketches made by Paul Kane as he traveled in the 1840's from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest, bronze sculptures by Frederic S. Remington and Charles M. Russell, and paintings by the twentieth-century artists of Taos, New Mexico. Walter Ufer

One of the Chicago artists who settled in Taos, Walter Ufer painted landscapes or figures with equal facility, choosing the New Mexican Indian as one of his main themes. Trained in the German academic manner and established as a western illustrator, Ufer developed away from narrative subjects to greater concerns with dynamic symmetry after he moved to Taos.

Painting directly from nature, Ufer tried to center his compositions around a natural circular or rhythmic element. He became particularly admired for his ability to capture the effect of the brilliant New Mexican sunlight.
