From Nature to the City: American Modern Works on Paper

Beginning September 26, and running through February 18, 2001, the Palmer Museum of Art will present From Nature to the City: American Modern Works on Paper.

Emotions and personal expressions come to the fore in this exhibition of early modern American masters including John Marin, Stuart Davis, Arthur G. During the first half of the twentieth century, American artists began moving away from academic traditions in favor of more personal and individualized approaches to the American scene. In their representations of nature and the urban environment, many artists experimented with European modernism, incorporating Fauvist and Cubist strategies in their visions of American life.

This selection of prints, drawings, and watercolors has been drawn from the collection of the Palmer Museum as well as from the collections of Jean and Alvin Snowiss and James and Barbara Palmer.(left: Oscar Bluemner, Triad Brilliant, Passaic River Hills, 1932, gouache, Gift of the Friends of the Palmer Museum)
