Slice of Life: Wayne Thiebaud Prints and Drawings

Throughout his career, Sacramento-based artist Wayne Thiebaud has demonstrated a special affinity for the ephemera of modern life: books, eyeglasses, ice cream cones, lipstick containers and the like. Often represented in the absence of any human presence, these fragments can serve as metaphors for the whole of individual experience. "Slice of Life" features thirty-five prints and drawings culled from the artist's important donation of some seventy works to the Crocker in 1995. Many of these works have never been on display; all of them reveal the artist at his most personal, introspective and experimental. "Slice of Life: Prints and Drawings of Wayne Thiebaud" recognizes and honors the artist's generous gifts and ongoing commitment to the Crocker and to the Sacramento community. Among the many familiar and not-so-familiar works in the exhibition are a pair of nude figure drawings, an earlier articulation of the well-known Candy Apples, plus sketches of figures and motifs later re-utilized and recombined in larger, more finished works. In each the artist demonstrates a penchant for the reworking of his main themes and a ceaseless appetite for variety within a chosen range of subjects. Other motifs make passing reference to the artist's passion for the history of art and knowledge of important works of literature. Thiebaud manifests an uncanny ability to imbue inanimate objects at once with individual character and with impersonal objectivity. As in all of his work, Thiebaud modulates his analytic probing of appearances with wistfulness and whimsy reflecting his own highly individual temperament.(left: Van, Crocker Art Museum collection))
