William Christine: The Grand Canyon Series

The Allentown Art Museum is presenting through September 28, 2003, the first public exhibition of a series of stunning Grand Canyon landscapes painted by Bethlehem artist William Christine (b. 1954)(right: William Christine (b. 1954), East Rim. A. M., 1999-2000, watercolor, Collection of the artist)

According to Christine: "During recent trips (1999) to the Grand Canyon with my family, I took pictures and did watercolor paintings. The huge, simple forms I saw in these images became the basis for the large acrylic paintings. The subject is of course the Grand Canyon, but none of the pictures is a literal description. Iíve edited things in the manner that suits me artistically. The paintings result from trying to take the simplification process of my watercolors to a larger scale and a different medium. In terms of painting, I hope to express the transcendent space, light, and color of the American Southwest. Stylistically, I want the paintings to have a sense of a personal calligraphy, and to reveal some of the process of the physical making of the painting through the maps of marks the observer encounters. Mostly, I try to encourage the materials at hand to come to lifeóto let the paint sing its beautiful and mysterious song."
