Subject: RE: Domestic Bliss, Family Life in American Painting, 1986

Dear Ms. Wittig,

I spoke to my colleague, Curator of Exhibitions Bartholomew Bland, about the internet reproduction of Domestic Bliss. From the material printed in the book, it does look like the Hudson River Museum holds the sole copyright. The issues I recall from that period must have been discussions about whether guest curators would have the right to reuse their own material, and I think the director told that it would not be a problem.

Anyway, as I mentioned, we are in the process of getting our publications onto Google Books. Most are already listed, and a few already scanned-this is ongoing. But we are agreeable to having Domestic Bliss also available on the TFAO website. I am afraid I have no more updated details about Lee Edwards than what may be in the catalogue. But I have always been in touch with Jan Ramirez and can tell you that she worked for many years at the Museum of the City of New York, then The New-York Historical Society, and, most recently, the 9/11 Memorial Museum. However, I think any updated bio should be generated and approved by her, since she has not worked here for 20 years. If you wanted to send an inquiry, I could forward it to her.

Please let me know if you need a more official permission on letterhead.

Sincerely,

Laura Vookles

Dear Laura,

Traditional Fine Arts Organization (TFAO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering education in American art through advocacy, publications and research. A special TFAO emphasis is building an archive of significant texts, authored by scholars and other informed individuals, beneficial for the study of art history in the United States.

As a public service, without charge to readers, TFAO annually publishes a number of scholarly articles and essays relating to American representational art in its publication Resource Library. The home page for TFAO is located at http://www.tfaoi.org. A list of published authors is at http://www.tfaoi.org/aa/4aa/4aa348.htm. For Resource Library's home page please see http://tfaoi.org/resourc.htm.

In 1986 the Hudson River Museum published a book entitled Domestic Bliss, Family Life in American Painting. Thank you for speaking with me about the article by Jan Seidler Ramirez, "The Victorian Household: Stronghold, Sanctuary, or Straightjacket (6 pages) and the article by Lee M. Edwards, "Domestic Bliss: Family Life in American Paintings" (15 pages) and clarifying that the Hudson River Museum is its owner. TFAO will be pleased to reprint both articles (without illustrations) in Resource Library.

Could you please confirm the Hudson River Museum's permission to reprint the two articles as owner of the text, without any accompanying illustrations, through a reply to this email addressed to me and to info@tfaoi.org? We further invite you to send a brief author's biography to accompany the text.

Best regards,

Stacey Wittig
