Carmel Plein Air 2000 and Marin Agricultural Land Trust Exhibitions

May is the month for connoisseurs of plein air painting to be in Carmel. Two nationally recognized art events - the Carmel Art Festival 2000 and the Oil Painters of America Ninth Annual National Juried Exhibition - will bring in top painters and collectors from all over the country.

During the Carmel Art Festival 2000, 75 painters from the Carmel Art Association, The California Art Club, Plein Air Painters of America, and Oil Painters of America and others will compete for $20,000 in cash prizes during this year's juried event. Painters will be seen around town, easels in tow, capturing the dramatic scenery of the Monterey Peninsula May 18-21, 2000. The exhibition will be showcased and auctioned at the Hanson Gallery on Ocean Avenue in Carmel. Festivities include an exhibition and silent auction, artists' reception and awards ceremony. The Oil Painters of America are assembling their centennial show which will feature 175 juried paintings as well as special pieces by the Master Signature Artists. Paintings by some of the most prestigious artists in the country will be exhibited at Gallery Americana in Carmel during the month of May. Contact Jennifer Hill at (831) 625-1511.

Marin Agricultural Land Trust Exhibition

The historic village of Nicasio in Marin County will once again be the location of the Marin Agricultural Land Trust's show and sale of landscape paintings depicting the ranch lands and open spaces of western Marin County. "Ranches & Rolling Hills," May 20-21, 2000, will benefit MALT's farmland preservation program which has protected 26,600 acres from non-farm development. Art in the show captures the area's sweeping views as well as single images of the region. Works range from highly representational landscapes to more abstract interpretations. Ranchers welcomed artists onto their properties in the weeks before the show to paint the lands protected by MALT conservation easements and other private farmlands, as well as ranches located in the Point Reyes National Seashore. Marin County artists Ralph and Martha Borge, Christin Coy, Willard Dixon, Jeri Nichols Quinn, Susan Hall, Dana Hooper, Bob Evans, Rick Lyttle, ZeeZee Mott, Ane Rovetta, Wendy Schwartz, Gary Smith, Tom Wood, and the Oak Group of plein air painters from Santa Barbara, including founders Ray Strong and Arturo Tello are among the 35 nationally known artists participating. All are dedicated to helping raise money to protect the lands that inspire their work. The artists contribute 50% of sales to MALT, a nonprofit organization created in 1980 by ranchers and environmentalists to permanently preserve Marin County farmlands.

The exhibit will be held at Druid's Hall, Nicasio. 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, and from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 21. Call: (415) 663-1158.
