Western Academy of Women Artists

The Western Academy of Women Artists was officially organized in 1995 with a commitment to provide a network of support and education, offer opportunities to showcase work to the public, elevate the image and economic level for women artists and promote the works of a select group of 48 Signature artists and 45 Associate artists living in the sixteen western states of the United States and Canada.

According to their mission statement, this is a "sisterhood of professionals" who share similar interests, problems, dreams and goals. To that end the list of accomplishments in a relatively short period of time is impressive. "We feel that the time has come to begin the final stage of our membership by including the rest of the country and will become the American Academy of Women Artists," states Maria Sharylen, founder and president. "We are now inviting artists from the East and Midwest regions to submit portfolios to the Signature Membership." The Academy is organizing several shows in western states in 1997, one of which is featured in the TFAOI Calendar of Events for May, 1997.
