The Vivid West of Veloy Vigil (1931-1997)

Hundreds of words could be used to describe the paintings and sculpture of Veloy Vigil, who was a soft-spoken, mild-mannered and gentle man. His inner self, however, exploded on canvas, in his printmaking and bronze sculpture in a multitude of lines and curves comprised of an extensive palette of color. Vigil has been described as a colorist and abstract impressionist by art historians, museum curators and other artists. Vigil himself used the "abstract impressionist" tag, saying "My observation of color, space and light is translated into abstract impressionist images."
Vigil was raised on a Colorado ranch. He rode the rodeo as a young adult. These experiences influenced his art, imbuing it with the spirit and action of the West. He said, "I love the freedom that the great out-of-doors imparts on my being." He was trained at the Colorado Institute of Art and the Denver Art Academy.
The Hubbard Museum of the American West is located one mile east of Ruidoso Downs Race Track, at 841 Highway 70 West in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. (information as of 7/99)
