New Director Frank Goodyear Jr. to Lead Heard Museum Into New Century

The Heard Museum has announced the appointment of Frank H. Goodyear Jr. as director of the internationally acclaimed museum. Goodyear's impressive leadership record through successful periods of growth at two prestigious museums was a strong factor in the search committee's decision to name him as director, according to Dr. E. Daniel Albrecht, chairman of the search committee and the immediate past president of the Heard Museum Board of Trustees. Goodyear will begin full-time at the Heard November 1, 1999.

"We met with several candidates and were impressed with Frank Goodyear's extensive and diverse background," Albrecht says. "In addition to his outstanding experience in planning and fundraising, Frank has exceptional management and people talents, great enthusiasm for the Phoenix community, and a warmth and personal concern for Native people."

Goodyear has served as director of planning and development at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center for the last five years, where he has directed the "Campaign to Secure the Future," a capital campaign that has raised 26milliontodatetowarda26 million to date toward a 26milliontodatetowarda38.6 million goal for an extensive capital construction and endowment project. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center consists of the McCracken Research Library and four museums - the Whitney Gallery of Western Art, the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Plains Indian Museum and the Cody Firearms Museum. Before his position at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Goodyear was director and then president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, posts he held for two years and 10 years, respectively. While at the helm of the Pennsylvania Academy, Goodyear expanded arts education programs including acquiring a new facility for the art school, instituting a Master of Fine Arts degree, establishing funding for scholarships and developing an exchange program with other art academies worldwide. Additionally, he was instrumental in the completion of a $6 million capital campaign in the late 1980s. He also served in leadership positions on several boards in Philadelphia including the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Mayor's Cultural Advisory Board, the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, and the Fairmont Park Art Association. Goodyear began his museum career in 1972 as a curator at the Pennsylvania Academy. During his tenure there, he spent two years when the academy was closed for extensive renovations as acting curator of American Painting and Sculpture at Yale University Art Gallery.

Goodyear received a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and a Master of Arts from the Winterthur Program in early American Culture at the University of Delaware. He also is a graduate of the Executive Training Program of the Columbia University Business School, and recently he was a participant in the Managing Institutional Advancement program at the University of Chicago Business School.

The announcement of Goodyear's hire comes as the Heard Museum celebrates its 70th anniversary and newly expanded facility, as well as plans to present more exhibits and increased educational programming.

"The Heard is one of the finest facilities in the country and has a wonderful reputation nationally," Goodyear says. "I'd like to see the Heard become an indispensable place in the life of metropolitan Phoenix as well. It's a vibrant community with so much to offer - from art and science museums, a symphony to an opera and theater companies, as well as four sports teams. My wife, Betsy, and I are excited to become a part of this growing city."

Goodyear notes that one of his priorities is to further strengthen the strong ties that already exist between Arizona's tribal communities and the Heard Museum. He has long had a keen interest in Native culture, education and art, going back to his work in the 1970s and '80s with the American Indian College Fund. He also will work closely with the Heard Museum Board of Trustees to update the museum's long-range plans, particularly as they relate to the expanded museum, and build its endowment, according to Clint J. Magnussen, newly appointed president of the Heard Museum Board of Trustees.

Goodyear replaces Martin Sullivan, who served as director of the Heard Museum for nine years and resigned in May 1999 to be chief executive officer of Historic St. Mary's City in Maryland and to teach at St. Mary' s College of Maryland.
