Photographs, Pictures and Sculptures
Photographs taken of Georgia O'Keeffe throughout her life reveal that the artist was as comfortable in front of the camera as she was in front of the canvas. An exhibition of photographs and works of art that opened October 30, 1998 at The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum,Photographs, Pictures and Sculptures, reveals the artist and her work as both subject and object. The photographs offer the viewer glimpses of O'Keeffe and her work through the camera lens while the paintings and sculptures on exhibit allow the viewer to see and experience the objects themselves. The exhibition will be installed in Gallery #3 and will continue at the Museum through April 15, 1999.
The majority of the black and white photographs in the exhibition are those taken from 1917 to 1935 by internationally known photographer Alfred Stieglitz, O'Keeffe's husband from 1924 until his death in 1946. Also included are photographs by Myron Woods, George Daniels, Eliot Porter and Bruce Weber.
Certain photographs in the exhibition are well known, such as Stieglitz's Georgia O'Keeffe: A Portrait -- at 291 (1917), in which O'Keeffe is pictured with her painting, Blue 11 (1917), a watercolor in the Museum collection. Other photographs include objects on display in Gallery #3 or the courtyard, such as _Special XVII (_1919), Abstraction(1916-1978/80) and Abstraction (1945-1979/80).
The exhibition was made possible through a generous loan of the Stieglitz photographs by the Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The Woods, Daniels, Porter and Weber images are part of The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum collection.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, which opened July 17, 1997, is dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting the artist's work. The 13,000-square-foot Museum houses a permanent collection of her art, which at this time numbers more than 100 works of art. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., except Fridays, when hours extend until 8 p.m. (Information as of 1/11/99)
