Walter Stuempfig: Paintings from the _Forbes_Magazine Collection
The brooding scenes of noted American realist painter Walter Stuempfig will be featured in a compelling one-man exhibition opening at The Forbes Magazine Galleries on January 21 and running through March 27, 1999.
"Whether landscape, still life or figural, Stuempfig's work evokes a sense of loneliness--a moody atmosphere not unlike that of the paintings of his fellow Pennsylvania Academician of the 19th Century, Thomas Eakins," said Christopher Forbes, Vice Chairman of Forbes Inc. "Forbes is pleased to feature his work in our first new exhibition of 1999."
Stuempfig's paintings, which portray dislocated loners amidst urban and rural landscapes, are often compared to those of famed American realist Edward Hopper. At the same time, his dramatic use of light and classical technique recall the work of the European Old Masters. Stuempfig's painting stands in dramatic contrast to many of his American contemporaries of the 1930s and 40s, who had embraced abstract expressionism. Works on display will include: Surf Casting; Spring Fresh; Pasture; High Tide, Hot Day; and The Basket.
Walter Stuempfig was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1914. He received his formal art training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he eventually taught drawing and composition from 1948 until his death in 1970. His work has been exhibited at museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Academy of Design.
"Walter Stuempfig: Paintings From The _Forbes_Magazine Collection" was originally on view at The Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania. It was curated by Bonnie Kirschstein, Curator of Fine Art, and designed by Peter Purpura, Exhibits Design Manager, and Gary Kisner, Associate Exhibits Design Manager, under the direction of Margaret Kelly Trombly, all of The Forbes Magazine Collection.
