Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition (8/11/99)

100 Years of the Art of Taos (1/99)

The Foothills Art Center, set against the dramatic panorama of the Rocky Mountains, is a successful blend of Colorado history and culture. Six gallery spaces under one roof display changing exhibitions of painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and other mediums. Admission is free, and Foothills offers memberships, volunteer activities, classes, and community projects for all.

The National Historic Register building, with bell tower visible amid pines and aspens, began as the First Presbyterian Church of Golden, constructed in 1872. Land was donated by railroad entrepreneur W.A.H. Loveland, and the old church--served by a colorful circuit-riding minister--was a center of social activity for the pioneer families of Golden. By 1968, congregations had outgrown the building, and a group of artists and business leaders bought and remodeled it as an art center. In recent years, the Center acquired the neighboring Victorian mansion. Also on the National Historic Register, it serves as a year-around gift gallery operated by volunteers.

Originally Colorado artists looked to Foothills as a major showplace for their work. In 1974, the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition brought Foothills its first national recognition. The Rocky Mountain National is regarded as one of the nation's distinguished annuals, and is eagerly awaited by art-lovers from the Southwest and beyond.

Foothills Art Center is involved in the life of its community, county, and state, offering group, solo, and theme shows featuring local and regional artists. Exhibitions and activities are often enriched by partnerships with other leading cultural institutions and museums in and outside Colorado. At Foothills, everyone is invited to join in the enduring adventure of art.

Location: 809 15th St., Golden, Colorado. (information as of 1/01)
