Narcissus in the Studio: Artist Portraits and Self-Portraits by Robert Cozzolino. Published by Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts - 2010 - 127 pages. Google Books says: "Among the most popular images in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' rich collection are self-portraits and depictions of studio life. This publication accompanies a landmark exhibition investigating the complex nature of artistic identity. Narcissus in the Studiofeatures texts by scholars and prominent contemporary artists whose work has tirelessly explored life in the studio. It includes an enormous selection of self-portraits and portraits of fellow artists by more than 60 major American artists from the nineteenth century to the present: Gertrude Abercrombie, Robert Arneson, William Beckman, Joan Brown, Thomas Eakins, Joe Fig, Viola Frey, Gregory Gillespie, Red Grooms, George Grosz, Barkley L. Hendricks, Sarah McEneaney, Archibald Motley, Jr., Vik Muniz, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Violet Oakley, John Frederick Peto, George Tooker and Benjamin West."

_Art in Chicago: Resisting Regionalism Transforming Modernism_by Robert Cozzolino. Published by Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts - 2007 - 82 pages. Google Books says: "Chicago is known as a center of innovation in architecture, literature and music, but Art in Chicagois the first broad overview of its twentieth-century fine art. It focuses on three distinct but overlapping generations of Modernists between 1913 and 1985 -- not just postwar artists such as Leon Golub and June Leaf, or later stars like Ed Paschke and Jim Nutt and the 1960s Hairy Who -- not any one clique, but the links between them. Through the decades, Chicago's art world has had a predilection for variety and the authenticity of personal vision, which it consistently privileges over the emulation of trends or established styles. Art in Chicagoplaces this penchant within the context of the larger culture of Modernism, and examines both a cradle of artistic excellence and the issue of "regionalism" in Modern art and criticism. With illustrations of historically important paintings, some reproduced for the first time."

_Eakins and the Photograph: Works by Thomas Eakins and His Circle in the Collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts_By Susan Danly, Cheryl Leibold Published by Published for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts by the Smithsonian Institution Press, 1994. ISBN 1560983523, 9781560983521. 235 pages. Google Books says: "One of the foremost American painters of the nineteenth century, Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) also was a pioneer in the fields of artistic and scientific photography. Although most of his photographs relate to his private life, he also used photography to prepare for his painting and sculpture projects to research anatomy and locomotion and as an expressive medium in its own right. His platinum prints broke new ground in photographic printing but the most innovative aspect of his work was his emphasis on the nude, then part of the French repertoire of academic visual studies but rarely encountered in the United States. Eakins and the Photograph is the first catalogue of the Eakins photographs in the Pennsylvania Academy's Charles Bregler collection, which includes about three fourths of Eakins's photographic output. The book describes the entire collection of 648 images, reproducing 173 black-and-white photographs, 52 duotones, and a portfolio section of 16 tritones. This is the first book to place Eakins's photographic works (and those of his circle) within the context of the transitional era between 1880 and 1900, when photography moved from the realm of commerce to that of art."
