Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield was born on 22 September 1694.1 He was the son of Philip Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Chesterfield and Lady Elizabeth Saville.1 He was baptised on 9 October 1694 at St. James' Church, Westminster, London, EnglandG.1 He married Petronilla Melusina von der Schulenburg, Countess of Walsingham, daughter of George I Louis Hanover, King of Great Britain and Ermengarde Melusina Baronin von der Schulenburg, on 14 May 1733.3 He was also reported to have been married on 5 September 1733.3 He died on 24 March 1773 at age 78 at Chesterfield House, Mayfair, London, EnglandG, without legitimate issue.3 He was buried on 10 April 1773 at Shelford, Nottinghamshire, EnglandG.3 His will was proven (by probate) in April 1773.3
He was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for St. Germans between 1715 and 1722.1 He held the office of Lord of the Bechamber to George, Prince of Wales between 1715 and 1727.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Lostwithiel between 1722 and May 1723.1 He held the office of Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard between 1723 and 1725.3 He succeeded as the 4th Baron Stanhope of Shelford, co.
