William Hobson was born on 26 September 1792 at County Waterford, Ireland.1 He was the son of Samuel Meade Hobson.1 He died on 10 September 1842 at age 49 at Auckland, New Zealand.1
He was commissioned on 24 August 1803 with the rank of 2nd class volunteer, in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1806.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1813.1 He gained the rank of Commander in May 1824.1 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand between 1840 and 1841.1 He held the office of Governor-General of New Zealand between 1841 and 1842.1
