Rt. Rev. John Christian Curwen was born on 12 July 1756 at Ewanrigg Hall, Dearham, Cumberland, EnglandG.1 He was the son of John Christian and Jane Curwen.1 He married, firstly, Margaret Taubman, daughter of John Taubman and Esther Christian, on 10 September 1775 at Kirk Maughold, Isle of ManG.1 He married, secondly, Isabella Curwen, daughter of Henry Curwen and Isabella Gale, on 9 October 1782 in a Edinburgh, Scotland marriage.1 He died on 11 December 1828 at age 72 at Workington Hall, Cumberland, EnglandG.1 He was buried on 13 December 1828 at Workington, Cumberland, EnglandG.1
He was given the name of John Christian at birth.2 He was a practising Barrister-at-Law.1 He held the office of Member of the House of Keys (M.H.K.) in 1777.3 He held the office of High Sheriff of Cumberland in 1784.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Carlisle between 1786 and 1813.1 In 1790 his name was legally changed to John Christian Curwen.2 He raised and commanded the Cumberland Volunteer Regiment during the Napoleonic Wars.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Carlisle between 1815 and 1820.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cumberland between 1820 and 1828.1 A founder of the Royal Agricultural Society, he was probably the leading agriculturalist of his day, and held so prominent a position in the House of Commons and the country that he twice had a peerage offered him, firstly by Mr Addington and later by Lord Castlereagh. Seven years after his second marriage, on 1 Mar 1790, he adopted the name and arms of Curwen, so changing his name from John Christian to John Christian Curwen.1
