William Crichton, 3rd Earl of Dumfries was the son of Charles Crichton, Lord Crichton and Sarah Dalrymple.1 He died on 28 February 1693/94, unmarried.1

Penelope Crichton, Countess of Dumfries was born in 1682 at Sanquar, Dumfries-shire, ScotlandG.2 She was the daughter of Charles Crichton, Lord Crichton and Sarah Dalrymple.1 She married Colonel Hon. William Dalrymple of Glenmure, son of John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair and Elizabeth Dundas, on 26 February 1697/98.1 She died on 6 March 1741/42.1
She succeeded as the 4th Viscountess of Air [S., 1622] on 28 February 1693/94.1 She succeeded as the 4th Lady of Sanquhar [S., 1622] on 28 February 1693/94.1 She succeeded as the 12th Lady Crichton of Sanquhar [S., 1488] on 28 February 1693/94.3 She gained the title of 4th Lady Crichton of Sanquhar and Cumnock [S., 1633] on 28 February 1693/94.1 She succeeded as the 4th Countess of Dumfries [S., 1633] on 28 February 1693/94.1 She succeeded as the 4th Viscountess of Air [S., 1633] on 28 February 1693/94.1 Her married name became Dalrymple.

John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair was the son of James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount of Stair and Margaret Ross.3 He married Elizabeth Dundas, daughter of Sir John Dundas, circa 18 January 1668/69.3 He died on 8 January 1707.4
He was styled as Master of Stair between 1690 and 1695.4 In 1692 he helped convince King William III to order the Massacre at Glencoe.4 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Dalrymple, of Stair [N.S., 1664] on 20 November 1695.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Glenluce and Stranraer [S., 1690] on 20 November 1695.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount of Stair [S., 1690] on 20 November 1695.3 He held the office of Lord Justice Clerk.4 He held the office of Lord Advocate.4 He held the office of Secretary of State.4 He was created 1st Lord Newliston, Glenluce and Stranraer [Scotland] on 8 April 1703, with a special remainder to the heirs male of his father.3 He was created 1st Viscount Dalrymple [Scotland] on 8 April 1703, with a special remainder to the heirs male of his father.3 He was created 1st Earl of Stair [Scotland] on 8 April 1703, with a special remainder to the heirs male of his father.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.5
