Robert Wolrige Gordon, 9th of Esslemont and 20th of Hallhead was born on 28 August 1890.1 He was the son of John Gordon Wolrige Gordon, 8th of Esslemont and 19th of Hallhead and Isabel Hervey Wodehouse.2 He married Joan Walter, daughter of Hubert Walter and Dame Flora Louisa Cecilia Macleod, 28th of Macleod, on 25 January 1927.1 He died on 3 October 1939 at age 49.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of in 1910 in the Grenadier Guards.1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Aberdeenshire in 1911.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded twice.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1915.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1916.1 He was on the staff of the Governor-General of Canada between 1922 and 1924.1
