John James Hope Johnstone was born on 5 October 1842.1 He was the son of William James Hope Johnstone and Hon. Octavia Sophia Bosville Macdonald.1 He died on 26 December 1912 at age 70, unmarried.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Grenadier Guards.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries-shire between 1874 and 1880.1 He succeeded as the 8th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell [S., 1662] on 11 July 1876, de jure.1 He succeeded as the 8th Lord Johnstone [S., 1662] on 11 July 1876, de jure.1 He held the office of Hereditary Steward of Annandale and Hereditary Keeper of Lochmaben Palace on 11 July 1876.1 In December 1876 he continued the 1876 petition for the Annandale titles.1 In 1877 he became mentally unstable.1 On 30 May 1879 his claim to the Annandale titles was disallowed.1

Octavia Sophia Bosville Macdonald.1 He married Mary Beatrice Christie, daughter of James Christie, on 22 January 1879.1 He died on 25 October 1910 at age 62, without issue.1
He gained the rank of Captain in the 7th Hussars.1 He lived at Skeynes, Edenbridge, Kent, EnglandG.1

Mary Beatrice Christie1

Mary Beatrice Christie was the daughter of James Christie.1 She married, firstly, Captain Wentworth William Hope Johnstone, son of William James Hope Johnstone and Hon. Octavia Sophia Bosville Macdonald, on 22 January 1879.1 She married, secondly, Peter Bevan Warrall on 27 October 1914.1 She died on 16 February 1950.
Her married name became Hope Johnstone. From 27 October 1914, her married name became Warrall.1

Evelyn Wentworth Hope Johnstone was born on 9 March 1879.1 He was the son of Captain Percy Alexander Hope Johnstone and Evelyn Ann Hope Johnstone.1 He married, firstly, Eileen Briscoe, daughter of Gustavus Villiers Briscoe, on 25 July 1905.1 He married, secondly, Marie Eleanor Domvile, daughter of Compton Charles Domvile and Eleanor Maria Isabel Richardson, on 1 May 1916.1 He and Marie Eleanor Domvile were divorced in 1925.1 He married, thirdly, Mary Evelyn Locke, daughter of John Locke, on 30 October 1926.1 He died on 26 October 1964 at age 85.1
