Lt.-Gen. Rt. Hon. Sir Percy Egerton Herbert was born on 15 April 1822.2 He was the son of Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis and Lady Lucy Graham.2 He married Lady Mary Caroline Louisa Thomas Petty-FitzMaurice, daughter of William Thomas Petty-FitzMaurice, Earl of Kerry and Lady Augusta Lavinia Priscilla Ponsonby, on 4 October 1860.1 He died on 7 October 1876 at age 54.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1840 in the 43rd Light Infantry.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1841.2 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1846.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1853.2 He gained the rank of Major in 1853.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Ludlow between 1854 and 1860.1 He fought in the Crimean War, where he was severely wounded at Alma and wounded at Sebastopol.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1856.2 He fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1857.2 He was awarded the Officier, Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1858 in the 82nd Foot.2 He was Deputy QMG of the Horse Guards between 1860 and 1865.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for South Shropshire between 1865 and 1876.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1867.1 He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to HM Queen Victoria between 1867 and 1868.2 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1868.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1869.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1875.2
