John Wrottesley, 2nd Baron Wrottesley was born on 5 August 1798.1 He was the son of John Wrottesley, 1st Baron Wrottesley and Lady Caroline Bennet.1 He married Sophia Elizabeth Giffard, daughter of Thomas Giffard, on 28 July 1821.1 He died on 27 October 1867 at age 69.1
He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, England.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1819 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was founder of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1820.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1823 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was Secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society between 1831 and 1841.1 He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1839.1 He held the office of President of the Royal Astronomical Society between 1841 and 1843.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Wrottesley, of Wrottesley, co. Stafford [U.K., 1838] on 14 March 1841.1 He succeeded as the 10th Baronet Wrottesley [E., 1642] on 14 March 1841.1 He held the office of President of the Royal Society between 1854 and 1858.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1860 with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)1
