Thomas de Holand, 1st and last Duke of Surrey was born circa 1371.1 He was the son of Thomas de Holand, 2nd/5th Earl of Kent and Lady Alice FitzAlan.2 He married Lady Joan de Stafford, daughter of Hugh de Stafford, 2nd Earl of Stafford and Philippa de Beauchamp, circa 20 October 1392.2 He died from 7 January 1399/0 to 8 January 1399/0 at Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England, beheaded by a mob after a failed plot to lay hands on King Henry IV.1
He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) between 1397 and 1399.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Kent [E., 1360] on 26 April 1397.1 He succeeded as the 6th Earl of Kent [E., 1321] on 26 April 1397.1 He succeeded as the 7th Lord Wake [E., 1295] on 26 April 1397.1 He was created 1st Duke of Surrey [England] on 29 September 1397.2 He held the office of Lieutenant of Ireland in 1398. He held the office of Marshal of England in January 1397/98.1
