Margaretha Geertruida Zelle was born on 7 August 1876 at Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.1 She was the daughter of Adam Zelle and Antje van der Meulen.1 She married Rudolph MacLeod, son of John Brienen MacLeod and Dina Louisa barones Sweerts de Landas, on 11 July 1895 at Amsterdam, The Netherlands.1 She and Rudolph MacLeod were divorced on 10 June 1907.1 She died on 15 October 1917 at age 41 at Vincennes, France, executed for espionage.1
Margaretha Geertruida Zelle used the stage-name of Mata Hari.1 From 11 July 1895, her married name became MacLeod.1
