An example of Phiz’s design for book-casing, an original piece that establishes the book’s rough and tumble theme. Dated 1842, its early appearance in Phiz’s corpus of work indicates that designing for his books’ covers was an activity he pursued throughout his long and productive career. He may even have designed for others – not impossible, given that designers of the period often worked in several fields.
