A binding by Gleeson White for his own work, ‘The Master-Painters of Britain’ (original) (raw)
Cloth binding for ‘English Illustration’
Joseph William Gleeson White
1897
Cloth binding with gilt overlays
12½ x 9¾ inches
This binding exemplifies Gleeson White's work in an Art Nouveau idiom. The combination of a stylized floral motif and elongation of the stems recalls the design of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and could easily be a product of the Glasgow school of design. It is significant that the book was published in Edinburgh by Jack, a publisher, like Blackie, that utilized the new style of the nineties as a matter of course.
