"In 1845, M. D. Hollins joined Mintons, and the Minton tile department became a separate concern, trading as Minton, Hollins and Company. Tile production in England in the mid-nineteenth century reached tremendous proportions, the initial impetus coming from the great increase in church-building then going on and the need for traditional paving tiles. Eventually tiles came to be used extensively in domestic building, for fireplace surrounds, conservatories, bathrooms, and kitchens, and in commercial building. for instance, for shop, restaurant, and public house interiors" — Elzea, Pre-Raphaelite Era, pp. 20.
