According to the Bonham's catalogue, "Muirhead Bone, generally accepted as one of the greatest draughtsmen and etchers of the twentieth century, met Conrad in 1923 aboard the Tuscania when they had communicating cabins. Bone's brother David was the captain of the ship and instructed his officers to adderess Conrad as captain, in deference to his former career as a mariner. Conrad sat for this portrait on 22 May 1923 at Folly farm, Great Barrington, Connecticut, when he was listening to Brahms, one of the three drypoint protraits Bone made of him in America. It was published in 1926."
