Lionel Lambourne points out that the painter's "deep interest in ritualistic subjects led him to depict such difering themes as a rabbi carrying the Scrolls of the law, a Roman Catholic priest elevating the host and a Greek Orthodox acolyte holding a censer and a sprig of myrtle blosson" (13).
