The Westminster Wizard; or, the Downy One of Downing Street

John Tenniel, artist

Swain, engraver

Punch (5 July 1884)

“Ladies and Gentlemen, while our Egyptian mystery is maturing, we will turn our attention to — a — _something else!_”

Mr. Punch's comment here mocks Gladstone by presenting him as a card sharp trickster — satiric imagery more usually associated with his great rival, Disraeli.
