In 1893, August Koehler (1866-1948), a German zoologist and microscopist, developed advanced "Koehler" illumination for standard microscopes of the day; he publishing a report of this work in Zeitschrift für wissenschaftliche Mikroskopie 10.4: 433-40. An English summary was published the following year in the Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society.
