Friedrich Julius Rosenbach (1842-1923) (original) (raw)

Friedrich Julius Rosenbach (1842-1923) studied medicine and bacteriology at Heidelberg, Göttingen, Vienna, Paris, and Berlin, earning an MD in 1867. In 1884 he published Mikro-Organismen bei den Wund-infections-krankheiten des Menschens while also isolating and naming_Streptococcus pyogenes_, the infectious agent in "scarlet throat," and erysipelas. In dermatology he was known for distinguishing_Staphylococcus aureus_ (golden cultures) and Staph. albus (white cultures); he is also known for "Rosenbach's disease" or "Erysipeloid of Rosenbach." (See also Loeffler, who demonstrated that in scarlatina the streps were always present in the patient's throat.)
