Thomas Hughes, by Sir Thomas Brock (original) (raw)

"Brock included a tribute to his subject's success as an author by giving Hughes a book in his left hand and a quill pen (frequently stolen) in his right. The large stetson hat which rests by Hughes' right foot is a good-humoured reference to the model settlement he unsuccessfully attempted to establish in Tennessee" (Sankey 194)
